This Just In: Big News in Pro Cycling!

I'm sure by now most of you have seen this shocking piece of news:

Yes, that's right, apparently up until now Bobby Julich was still racing, which we can infer from the fact that he's just announced his retirement. While we'll all be sad to see Bobby go (even though many of us thought he already had), at least it will make room for some fresh, new faces in the peloton. Personally, I think he's making a wise choice. He's already 36, and to race professionally at 37 would be ridiculous.

And now back to the Fun Quiz.

I have to say, it took some hunting to find the news about Julich. Maybe some highlighter or something, eh?

Lance, this podium proves that wisdom can only take you so far.

First Orbach beats me again, now you tell me racing is over at 37.

Poor BobbyJ... upstaged by Lance once again. But hey, at least, given he never really won, we can say he was clean, right?

Lance is back in pro cycling just to support his mountain biking habit.

Bobby J clean??? hmmm. raced on Cofidis, US Postal and Telekom...all teams with deep histories in doping. Nor has he ever spoken out about the doping in cycling...

Either way Bobby J is class and I will miss him....Lance should stick to being a jerk to half ass hollywood bimbos.

In cycling, retiring just means that you start riding a tandem on weekends with your friend's wife in the backseat.

thetrustfundpunker said...

Julich is cool, Armstrong should stick to dating girls in the tabloids and or Matthew McConaughey.

g said...

Julich never road for US Postal. But that doesn't make him clean either.

just sayin'

Sycophantic Backstabber said...

Does this mean that Lance is the Micheal Jordan of cycling?

ASTANAshing!

I've been waiting to say that.

Great, bring back the cheat!
Can we just call lance, Favre?

manicallday said...

I guess Lance is tired of riding in really slow circles.

They assume Astana will actually get invited to the TdF.

Lance should race the Giro or the Vuelta.

...Or maybe he is trying to pay off his water bill:

You know you are going to hell for that.

lance is creepy. i bet he votes for mccain and extolls the so called virtues of the free market.

ant1st said...

anon 5:12 - you're right, the free market sucks. If only we didn't have that bullshit capitalist system, we wouldn't have to deal with morons like you posting stupid comments on non-government controlled website. Or websites in general. Or a choice as to what bike(s) we ride. God, I wish I lived in China. Freedom sucks.

frilly said...

Kevan I love that! Is it okay if I use it sometime?

ASTANAshing! I just love saying it.

BSNYC, you're becoming a master of your craft: brilliance flows from you at your whim. This little ditty is the best example yet, like Bach's inventions; it shows an eyebrow-raising level of mastery.

Cyclingnews has an update that Bruyneel was surprised by the rumours-oh yeah, its a 90% done deal.

Rumor has it Armstrong has dropped Astana and has instead joined Team Rivendell, led by Grant Petersen.

Since this is the Tour de France, the team will be riding the lugged steel Atlantis touring bike, complete with racks, front and rear panniers, generator hub, lights, 36 spoke wheels and Schwalbe 'Big Apple' racing tires.

Armstrong feels any time lost due to excess weight will be recaptured in momentum during the downhill stages. Riders will have the option of adding fairings to gain an aerodynamic advantage.

"It IS all about the bike, after all!" exclaimed Armstrong. "By riding a fine classic lugged steel bicycle, not only are we actually gaining a weight and durability advantage over our carbon fiber counterparts, but we are adding style points...if the Tour de France actually awarded style points."

The stoic Grant Petersen had no comment. Sources close to Rivendell say he is busy formulating strategy and designing a classic custom wool jersey for the event. Cycling caps are required, however, helmets will be optional.

The John Coltrane of excuses just got delivered a doosie of a new excuse. Perhaps riders should only be allowed to win it once and then you must retire, s'pose that means we will have his whiny voice around for eternity

i heard the CIA shaved a gorilla and named him lance armstrong to infiltrate france via bicycling...

...anon 11:46pm...what a ridiculous premise...that heavy brow & thick jaw would have even the french anti-doping agency, the "oui, oui, pee, pee" up in arms looking for 'human growth hormone'...

...now, a shaved sasquatch or even lance's pal robin williams...that might work...

...besides, the last significant headline in french cycling was "bernard hinault retires"...

...just archivin'...

I think it's fair to put air quotes around the "free market" in this country.

it is a free market: i am selling my new bianchi i bought last week for one hundred dollars more than i paid. i did professionally install some Oury grips since then...

Any of you pipsqueaks ever try to find cycling shoes to fit a real foot? Even a 48 (size 10 in the US) is hard to find sometimes, and that's too small for my youngest kid. Talk about a neglected demographic!

It's remarkable to see the bitter resentment of professional cyclists just ooze out of this blog. There isn't a lot of meat on them bones but I'm pretty sure your readership shivers a little when you post like this.

BikeSnob can has fail. Epic fail.

And I can't believe it took you two years to post that podium joke. Or rather, I can't believe you posted that Besides, given the typo rate that this place, you don't (proof)read it very well.

Ant1st,

The problem with the current free market is that it's only free one way. Japan, France, China and all the others still levy tarrifs on our products when sold over seas. It's made things ripe for US corporations to ship jobs over seas and has made it harder for US companies who pay their workers more than they do in other countries to compete. Try to deny it all you want, but that's really why our economy in a nose dive. We've sold ourselves out. Does it really matter if you can buy stuff cheap at Walmart if you lost your job to someone in China or India?

Side note, both parties are responsible and thought it was a great idea at the time, but now it's becoming a party line issue. Funny.

Apparently in all these articles it says that Lance is planning on racing some cyclocross this fall. Has anyone heard which races? I'd love to race my ass off for half an hour and then puke on him when
I get lapped.

To "g said"-"Julich never road for US Postal. But that doesn't make him clean either"

do your due diligence- He did ride for US Postal.

Check the facts son.

Anyone else just dying to see Bret Favre racing for Astana and Lance Armstrong quarterbacking the Jets? Everyone gets what they need--a kick in the shorts...

You are very foolish people. No reason for you to put faith in the free market when Putin who is savior of planet (not upstart Obama) knows where to put money.

bikesgonewild said...

...anon 1:04pm..."check the facts, son" ???...

...here are the real facts, ah, son...a list of bobby julich's pro cycling teams, just to keep you better informed...
...Spago - '92...
...Chevrolet - '94...
...Motorola - '95 -'96...
...Cofidis -'97 -'99...
...Crédit Agricole - '00 -'01...
...Telekom - '02 -'03...
...Team CSC - '04 -'08...
...CSC-Saxo-Bank - '08 - into retirement & perhaps a job as a director & mentor w/ team saxo-bank...

...now you can be an "expert"...

Next year, there should be a small box in the corner of the screen showing Lemond. There can be a webcam and heartrate monitor (maybe even a blood pressure cuff) on him during the entire Tour de France. I predict the graph will look similar to that of the riders. Easy on the early flat stages, except for the crazy sprint finish where Lemond's heart will be racing in anticipation of an Armstrong pile up. A high heartrate due to pre-race jitters before Armstrong's TT. . .
