Steve Tilford has died:
If you don't know who he is take the time to read his blog (though it appears to be crashing due to all the traffic) as well as the stories about him that will no doubt be forthcoming. If you do know who he is then you know it's hard to believe he's gone.
I didn't know Tilford personally, nor do I typically do moments of silence on the blog, but since he was someone I respected as a blogger I feel compelled to do one now. If you need to hear more prattling from me in the meantime, you can of course find it on today's Bike Forecast, and rest assured I'll be back here soon.
See you later,

podium, finally after 5 years of trying
.
No joy on the podium today...
Tears
Met him once. What a force. This hits hard
Sort of eerie how many of Tilford's posts leading up to yesterday consider the various dangers of riding bikes-- racing in the rain, mountain biking, deciding to train on the track, mri images, etc....
I recall all that late night and tired driving to races all over kingdom come back when I raced. A broken collarbone from running slick tires does pale in comparison.
Unrelated to risk, now I tell my friends why I ride our comparatively demure local trail over driving to the world class trails thirty car minutes away, "driving to ride is like selling your body to make money to have sex with a prostitute." Not saying I don't do it occasionally, but it always feels that way to me unless I have a damn good other reason to be in the car (like last week's foray near Santa Cruz which was a mixed outing with giving a relative a ride to chemotherapy.)
Bad news on a dreary morning.
Eight again, Scranus.
RIP Steve Tilford.
Agree. He will be missed.
I am speechless. In addition to Mr. Tilford's blog, which is crashing, Bill Strickland wrote something that is well worth reading. Link is here.
Not only the bike master but he could remodel a house like Bob Damn Vila.
Half Mast today gentlemen....
Tilford is one of not many racers I respect as a warrior. Just 100% built and wired to race bikes, a real competitor and somehow modest in displaying absolute toughness. The foreshadowing in his blog is eerie, and this happened just after he vowed to ride indoors the rest of the year. RIP Steve Tilford
The Tilf was a total badass. RIP.
Glad to see no TedK today. Maybe it's a fluke, but perhaps the fuckface behind the TedK username is actually human being with a sense of decency. Go fig.
Freddy Murcks,
No, he posted.

I am assuming you deleted it, Wildcat? If so, thank you. And I withdraw my suggestion that the person behind the TedK username may be a human being with a functioning conscience. Fuck TedK for fucking hell.
Almost all the "bicycle people" I come across are just golden. When they go it is sad. When they go too young, it's heartbreaking.
So sorry to hear about this.
Sad day in cycling. I had recently been reading his blog daily and agreed with nearly all his opinions, from helmets to Trump.
I grew up in western Colorado and I have driven the section of interstate where this crash occurred. I have no idea how it happened or exactly where it happened, but it seems to have been pretty ugly - calling it a tragic chain of events doesn't even begin to cover it. The SLTrib has the best coverage I have seen so far, if anybody is interested in more detail.
Shitty few days. First, Mike Hall and then Tilford.
RIP
