This Just In: Snö Dā Today!

As you may or may not be aware, New York City is in the grip of SnowPocaGeddon 2017, the Killer Blizz-Tastic Nor'Easter from Hell:

Though now the blizzard warning has been cancelled:
And yet there are currently cotton ball-sized snowflakes falling steadily outside my window, so go figure.

Either way, the schools are closed, and as of my most recent contract renegotiation I reserve the right to shirk my curatorial responsibilities in such cases so that I can tend to my seventeen (17) children.  In other words, blogging service is suspended for today, and will resume tomorrow:

("Woosie.")

Deal with it.

Thanks for your understanding, annoyance, relief, or indifference as the case may be, and I'll see you back here tomorrow.  (And yes, I can see you, thanks to my CIA-level surveillance capabilities.)

Jörs Trüli,

Wikiquote quote of the day:

If we want to improve the world we cannot do it with scientific
knowledge but with ideals. Confucius, Buddha, Jesus and Gandhi have done
more for humanity than science has done. We must begin with the heart of
man — with his conscience — and the values of conscience can only be
manifested by selfless service to mankind.
--Albert Einstein

Einstein forgot to mention another popular mythological character... oops, I didn't mean "mythological character".... I meant "prophet"

He forgot to mention Mohammed. Coincidence? I don't think so.

That's racist!

Bad boy of the north - you set it down for a minute and it got buried. Hurry up and find it before I hit it with the snowblower. I'm running out of shear pins.

This has been one CRAZY winter. Chicagoland received it's last snow mid December before getting 3/4" yesterday, and then 3/4" again today. Maybe we should ship most of our stored salt to NYC?

We here in Porkopolis got just the tip of your storm. A light dusting that barely stuck to the grass and didn't affect roadways at all. Of course the fuck-os in the cars acted like it was scranus-deep and traffic snarled.

Sounds like Fat Tire weather. Billy Joe Bob's Big Dump Tire Shop also sells tires for bikes.

Snow, making it time for "phat" tires with some big NAHBs? Nah, not really.

Cheers to the bike commuters out there today! Saw a fat bike with a blinky light in the front and an intrepid gentleman on the seat braving the elements. It made my day.

Serial Retrogrouch said...

...I wish my commuter had slightly more clearance at the fenders... I would be out there just testing the "not-so-fat" tires I have on it... but because of the darn tires, I left like 1mm for the fenders.

...I wonder if the illegal immigrants are all riding bikes in the empty bike lanes today. You can tell an illegal immigrant by the generous clearance they give their fenders.

We had a blizzard of 3-4" proportions Saturday but amazingly it did not stay on the roads so I road my roadbike and took some pics of geese and covered bridges and junk.

"Snö Dā Today!" could have been written "Snödag idag!" How did you manage to put the "pricks over "O""?

Serial Retrogrouch said...

...update.... I rode my bikecycle with tiny clearance at fenders in this snow. It rides just fine. and fattish tires are great... though #whatpressureyourunning has to be checked by a lab before you go out there.

...what you gotta look out for is the snow plows and the stupids who think it's safe to drive a tiny car on NYC clogged roads. Many vehicles stranded out there in the small streets where not much plowing has been done.

Knüt Fredriksson said...

Cereal Robocouch,

Earlier this winter I had a day where the snow and ice accumulation between my fenders and my tires was causing a lot of drag. I cleaned out the fenders and adjusted them for more tire clearance and it stopped being a problem. I don't know if the temperature and snow consistency changed enough overnight to prevent the issue, or if the extra clearance helped, but I'm definitely going to attribute the improvement to my excellent mechanic-ing skillz.

I suppose you should attribute your result to your excellent "riding a bike with little or no tire clearance" skillz...
