Not One But *Two* New Outside Columns! It's a Festivus Miracle!!!

Yep, that's right, here's a column about how the rest of the world is kicking New York City's ass when it comes to breaking the stranglehold of the Automotive Industrial Complex:

And here's the gift guide you've been waiting for in order to commence holiday shopping:

Hey, if nothing else, you gotta admit I put the "pro" in prolific.

Beats working, anyway.

to solve the major problems associated with the automotive culture we need to build quantum tunnels; something to bring up at the next tesla meeting.

Good one Snob adding a skateboard to your gift list...I was chuckling pretty loudly when I got to that one! Tho in my case I think it works the other way...when my wife has a day off and I also get that same day off, she's pretty happy for me to go on an all day ride (she really does like me, but she also likes her 'alone time', and I'm MORE than happy to oblige! "Oh gee honey...yes, I GUESS I can go on a ride today...are you sure? I'd be MORE than happy to stay home and vaccumm or do laundry or something". (AND, I get points for making her happy! Talk about a win win!)

Nice gift list, the skateboard was a laugh. Maybe DiBlasio could get a skateboard. I think unless global warming is understood as a real existential threat in this country, no one will contemplate demoting the car. Americans usually irrationally believe technology will save them, and so Mr. Elon Musk’s hype-rtunnel concept had a dog and pony show today. It’s “revolutionary” despite it only being an individual electric car driving in a single lane - because it’s all underground! It’s stupid, full stop, just an insanely wasteful rehash of the existing auto infrastructure’s problems. I hope pedestrianizing, bike infrastructure and public transit get a big boost in US cities and not this hyperloop hypertunnel BS.

Can you get a four wheeled drive skateboard for those really snowy days?
Also,checkout ridge supply for sox.
Just sayin'.
Additionally, when nyc will be without gas guzzling vehicles, I'll be long gone when that happens. It'll happen though.

I commute to work 5 days a week, here, in suburban Los Angeles. I rarely see another cyclist doing the same at 6 am.

Tan, Other countries have an advantage when it comes to getting people to forego cars in favor of other modes of transportation. Namely the average person in these countries doesn't have the means to drive a Tahoe or Expedition with seating for 8, DVD players, etc. A leased Hyundai is a luxury for them, typically. getting lazy/ fat Americans out of their land yachts with 10 cup holders and onto a bike (or scooter) is a hard sell. Sadly -masmojo

Anonymous 10:54am,

The Americans driving those cars don't have the means either.

...lobdammit, TanT. I've been reading your reports on ticketing on First Ave all week... and kept telling myself to be vigilant. I got caught by an unmarked police car at 19th St/1st Ave this morning... and got a ticket. It's a real blitz!!

Merry kwanza!

Tu as raison! (You are correct!) Have you seen what a giant SUV with 10 cupholders costs? Or a GMC pickup? The sick joke on the American populace is that we ostensibly "need" SUVs and pickups(or the "crossover" (crossover from what, exactly?)) [I do recognize that there are those who use them - pickups -for real work and I categorically exclude them from this diatribe.] GO to any parking liot - all giant cars. Ahh...I'm ranting like an old man.

Happy Festivus, Glorious Kwansa, and Merry Christmas to all!

I received a letter in the mail yesterday from the Department of Motor Vehicles. I don't drive, so I knew it had to be bike-related. Sure enough, it was about two red light tickets...from 1993. The tickets were dismissed. I'm pretty sure that was the last or the next to last year I was ticketed. If I can go another twenty five years without a ticket I'll be 80 years old. A track bike-riding octogenarian. Someone's gotta do it.

Meanwhile,in the Netherlands,a tax credit of .22¢ per kilometer commuted is offered as a credit against your tax liability. True.

NYC doesn't need to ban cars, and let's be honest, aside from some self-righteous posturing, only .0001% really care enough about global to change their lifestyle, so there's no point in mentioning it. Anyone who has taken a couple flights in their life can just shut up when it comes to global warming. Why are NYC streets over-crowded with cars? Because the government provides free or underpriced parking and doesn't enforce parking violations enough (see the Snob's writing about people's unpaid tickets). Get rid of a good deal of on-street parking and let the market determine prices for parking (yeah, I know "market" is a bad word for lefties in NYC, but it simply means millions of people determining the price of something via instantaneous and sometimes undetectable transactions and interactions, as opposed to your saviour, "progressive" City Hall giving away parking for free or at a discount). Work vehicles and vehicles for hire are a productive part of the city, and they'll like be willing to pay more for parking if it means reducing traffic, because, let's say $25 for getting to and from a work site an hour or more earlier will likely be worth it. Or if a group of people from NJ (God forbid!) or outer parts of buroughs want to pay $40 or more to carpool and park instead of taking the shit subway and buses (another thing the progressive government has run into the ground) they should be able to. In short NYC traffic is a result of government policy. The only solution is letting people freely and efficiently determine the true value of street space.
