Ride Bikes This Weekend. Or Don't! See If I Care.

As I mentioned, yesterday I overslept and missed my morning ride.  So, by way of a make-up, I did the next best thing and took an evening ride:

Yes, thanks to my proximity to the legal mountain bike trails at Highbridge Park in Manhattan I can zip down there in no time and knock around a little bit before the sun sets.  Sure, it's not exactly an "epic," but sometimes all you need is a small helping of dirt, roots, and rocks (and a little broken glass)* to get yourself back on track.  Plus, it was a lovely warm evening, summer was in the air, and everybody out on the street was in good spirits.  Best of all, on the way home I stopped at Target, where I refrained from taking off my shoes and cooling off in this open hydrant for awhile:

That Jones bag, by the way, has been just the ticket for my sub-epic non-bikepacking lifestyle.  It affords me just enough room for a pump, some snacks, my sunglasses, and an extra t-shirt in case I need to look presentable and/or not feel disgusting.  Basically it's my purse is what I guess I'm saying.  As for Ol' Piney, I continue to love the bike, and I'm glad to be reunited with it after a long, wet spring during which the trails were muddy and best left alone most of the time.

Not only did I do a make-up ride, but I also managed to wake my ass up early today and do a quick double sawbuck on the Renovo.  And if that weren't enough, a few hours later I headed out again on Ol' Piney up to the forbidding Trails Behind The Mall [html tag for dripping blood font]:

Yeah, that's right, I did two rides in one day, and that's not even including this morning's school run!  It's all very impressive--so impressive Strava says I'm "right in the zone" this week, which is the nicest and most encouraging thing anybody's said to me ever.

Anyway, with any luck I'll manage to counteract all that activity by parking myself on the beach this weekend.  (Though now that I think about it, chasing kids around the beach requires much more energy than recreational bicycle cycling.)  Hopefully your long weekend is an enjoyable one, ride safe, and I'll see you when I see you.

Yours and so forth,

Wildcat Etc.

*Glass quip aside, the trails at Highbridge were in fantastic shape and very clean.  I assume I have the hard work and dedication of NYCMTB to thank for that.  Lob knows I don't do shit.

as really silly as i would feel having to admit i have a bike purse, and i would also hate to have to have such not attractive handull bars, but i will fully admit that thing does put the awful in awfully darn handy and i kind of want one.

great. a purse.

wait, do i also have to get a brown one in case i'm wearing certain other color shoes?

great. two purses.

happy long holiday weekend to everyone. enjoy biking or whatever fun activity. its going to pour rain in florida all weekend so perfect weather for purse shopping.

Pbateman, i’ve been ogling your beautiful RB-1 re: last week and don’t think you can go wrong with either the natural Cambium or a full leather Brooks. I don’t get the arguments against a high dollar Brooks if your scranus likes them. Black Turbos look awesome but give me a numb scranus. Which can be okay if yr into that.

The jones bag makes me laugh.

Reunited with the only bike you are supposed to be riding for all of 2018. if you end up riding less than 10 bikes in 2018, we'll call it good.

If you are wondering about the surf, check out this website:
https://magicseaweed.com/Rockaway-Surf-Report/384/

I find it to be a very valuable resource as the weather at the beach is always different then the rest of the city and Wezchester.

Have a great weekend everyone!

PS Just met a fellow Snob reader who had ridden from Brooklyn, up the OCA to Croton. He is a vintage Trek aficionado who grew up somewhere near the Snobby, and was wondering where he got his bikes as a kid? I guess he had some connections to local bike shops that were in that area back in the day.

As handlebar mounted purses go the Brompton T-bag (gigglesnort) is king. Amazing what fits in that thing.

@pist - thanks, but those two i posted were pulled from a big search engines images results, but they are more or less what i'm going for. in fact, i have both of those printed out and they are pinned to my inspiration board along with a bunch of vintage parts, purses and a really big enlarged photo of snobs face.

my frame is currently sitting at a local body shop where i had them primer it after i had it media blasted (it was a hot mess of rust and jacked up paint). Some nice yellow paint will be going on as soon as i get the decals from velocals.

dont tell anyone but mine is a '89 so it should be black and white, but the '93 yellow scheme is just soooooo good looking so i'm doing that.

if anyone has a an old school Bstone headbadge, like from the 60's...i could really use one. Even Bstone corporate, who amazingly took the time to respond, confirmed that mr. Peterson stole them all upon his departure in the 90's.

@Pist

My scranus likes Turbos. All I've ever had is black so I can't say if any other colors are more or less comfortable. Assuming my scranus isn't racist, any other color of Turbo would be just fine too.

toured with a brown leather turbo2 for a long time. beautifully styled. then my poor pedaling style slowly wore it down on one side so i traded it before it wore through.

i did one of those early morning rides snob has been snobbing on about.

turns out that even though my mind was very angry with the concept, i believe my body received an extra boos of energy and i had a very productive day.

only reason i was up early though was because my neighbor a few doors down was f'ing shot down in the street so awoke to a pretty wild crime scene mon morning. kind of nuts.

anyway, hope everyone else had a much safer weekend!

I followed your advice to the letter.
I rode bikes this weekend, I also didn't.

I don't think I care either.

Got up for an early-ish ride Memorial Day. Crashed heavily, mildly broke one index finger in the “volar plate” area. Oh well, crashing is part of the sport, and it’s been a while. A minor fracture is way better than waking up to a murdered neighbor.

Well, I’m up ready to ride at this lob-forsaken 4:30am CDT, and it’s raining, again. But I woke up the cat instead of it waking me up, so I’ve got that going for me.
