This Just In: I Got A New Site!

Good morning!

I'm pleased to announce I've teamed up with/infiltrated/been abducted by the smugness mafia over at Transportation Alternatives, and together we're bringing you a new site called...

Here's the email that went out this morning:

Dear Wildcat Rock Machine,

I am Eben Weiss, a.k.a Bike Snob NYC.
Since 2007, I've been publishing the BikeSnobNYC blog, my lovingly sarcastic take on the cycling world. Now, with Transportation Alternatives, I'm embarking on a new project:

Drivers and straphangers can always find local media reports on traffic jams and transit delays. But what if you ride a bike?

Bike Snob’s Forecast is your answer -- a daily digest for #BikeNYC. Every morning, I’ll update you on the weather and provide you with all the information you need to ride your bike that day.

Citi Bike down? Snow in the bike lane? NYPD ticket blitz? Before you drag your bike out of the house, check out Bike Snob’s Forecast.

Besides the weather, I’ll keep you up to date on the cycling zeitgeist with news from New York and beyond -- whether it's London's £770m investment in cycling initiatives or the xenophobic community board member blocking a new bike lane in Queens.

And periodically, I will share longer features on cycling in New York City -- from ride guides to in-depth mockery -- to remind you of the many ways in which this great city is best experienced by bike.

Bike Snob’s Forecast is a resource built exclusively for New York City and people who ride bikes here. Check it out, and let me know what you think at bikesnob@transalt.org.

Eben Weiss
Bike Snob NYC (and TransAlt's newest blogger)

P.S. Excited about Bike Snob’s Forecast? You can help support this project with a tax-deductible donation to Transportation Alternatives. Donate now to support Bike Snob’s Forecast.

I'm looking forward to this for many reasons, not least of which because it gives me a great excuse to get out on the bike and ride around the city.

Jimmy Breslin is rolling in his grave.

Anyway, the Bike Forecast will be updated daily, if you need me this week that's where I'll be.

I love you,

--Wildcat Rock Machine

PS: No, don't worry, this blog isn't going away.  It's like the chewing gum in your spokes: impossible to get out.

First! Good morning everyone.

Nothing like waking up way late and checking to see if the Snob posted on a Monday morning and to find that he has!

Ok, I'll stop now.

Crap, now is this page abandoned to the weather forecast?

224. The people who rise to positions of power in leftist movements tend to be leftists of the most power- hungry type, because power-hungry people are those who strive hardest to get into positions of power. Once the power-hungry types have captured control of the movement, there are many leftists of a gentler breed who inwardly disapprove of many of the actions of the leaders, but cannot bring themselves to oppose them. They NEED their faith in the movement, and because they cannot give up this faith they go along with the leaders. True, SOME leftists do have the guts to oppose the totalitarian tendencies that emerge, but they generally lose, because the power-hungry types are better organized, are more ruthless and Machiavellian and have taken care to build themselves a strong power base.

Cool - congrats on the new venture! Before you know it, you will be THE bicycle authority in the whole of the USA

I hope you get enough $$ to do your reporting by helicopter. All good traffic reports are done this way. Often wonder who's listening and watching these since the jams are always present.

Will there be hats?

Wish you success with the new column. Maybe I'll read your forecast to see if any storms are coming my way. It's got to be better than that other forecast source that gives names to all the rain clouds.

Gum in the spokes! Ugh! That is the worst...

Weather and traffic reports, bike lane updates, NYPD ticket blitz warnings plus...shrimp news!

I read that NY Governor Cuomo just kicked off a $1,800,000,000 project to build and improve freeways in the South Bronx. Motivations for the project include: facilitating automobile access to a small public park for Bronx residents, and to reduce the pollution from all the trucks which visit a nearby produce market each day. The news story indicated that local residents suffer from a disproportionate amount of respiratory diseases caused by the truck traffic.

All of that is going to be solved by a new freeway. And funded via high taxes.

Dear Snob,
How are you possibly going to be able to find the time to continue your blog with your new forecrasting, Brooks schmoozing, numerous book signings at every bike venue, oh and as if I could forget, your 17 feral children running amucked? Sounds like an order in the tallest of realms.

Yours,
The original "Venge/Schmenge" owner

I go look at the SnobCast, just out of not wanting to work, and I discover it goes back to January. So if you had a bad ride one day, now you can go back and blame the His Snobness.

Are you going to give a Portland, OR bike forecast also? We are Americas greatest cycling city with the best bike shops, the strongest racers and commuters, and the best cyclocross series in the world.

Anonymous said...

Who the hell cares about Noo Yawk? We come here for snarky comments, not the freakin' weather or bicycle traffic conditions in some huge city with far too many people. Straighten up Snobby or I'll quit paying to read your blog. Oh, wait...

I live in an open-carry state, but it was still quite the shock this morning to see the bike commuter with the pistol and holster prominently on display on his hip.

Bet aggressive motorists give him wide berth.

I still hate gun nuts, and kinda secretly hope he crashes and accidentally shoots himself in the buttocks in the process.

Respect is earned through good words, deeds and thoughts, and not at the point of a gun.

So wait, does "Dear WCRM," refer to the collective "we"? Or just the NYC "we". I always thought of it as the singular BSNYC, but the bloggular machine requires readership. Or did you write yourself a letter? Or maybe it was just poorly proofread.

Can you take you forecasts to video? Maybe you could just write the copy and have it read by someone that has physical attributes that me and Mario C. could appreciate?

BTW, I announcing right now, in this blog, the release of my new bottom bracket standard - BB404. The axle is elliptical in cross section with a maximum dimension of 34mm which is phased with the highest torque point in the pedalling cycle (for maXxX stiffness!). The design also incorporates press fit design for manufacturers' needs for ease of assembly. The novel use of a polymer material called, styrofoam is unique in its sonic attributes. Once the newstandard takes hold I think we'll be seeing a lot more bike sales.

I'm a long way from NYC; maybe it doesn't matter. But on principle, I hate log in only comment sections.

So is today the official rollout of the BikeSnobNY forecast? Were the forecasts for January 18 through March 17 like a Beta test for select focus groups? I didn't get to be one of those. Brooks Cambium C17 testers either. Maybe you could get a helper monkey to curate comments relevant to the day's NYC cycling on the forecast.
