Some Sad News

By now many of you probably know that Fat Cyclist's wife Susan passed away last night. Fat Cyclist is the Patron of cycling bloggers, and his strength, graciousness, and good humor is well-known to all who follow him. It's a rare thing to both entertain and inspire people the way Fatty does, and I know he in turn draws entertainment and inspiration from his readers. That is the best kind of success. (That, and all the free bike stuff he gets.) So as a fan and fellow blogger I'd just like to take this knuckle tattoo-free moment to once again thank him and to wish both him and his family the best, and I hope you'll join me in thinking fondly of them all on your commute this morning, or at your destination if you're already there, or on your your couch if you get to sit home all day.

If only I could come close to Fatty and Susan's outlook on life. "She led the charge. She showed the rest of us how to fight: with determination, focus, creativity, and outrageous endurance."

The courage that family has shown throughout the ordeal has been amazing. Take care, Elden and family.

Elden, you and Susan are an inspiration.

When one considers the family Susan and Elden have raised and the fight against cancer Susan and Elden led and still lead, how can anyone doubt that Susan won?

My prayer for Elden is that some day soon he finds himself thinking about the good Susan and he have done, the family he and Susan have raised and that he smiles. A lot.

I know all of our hearts go out to him and his family.

Snob,
Thanks for supporting Fatty.
This is when the bike blogging community feels like family.

It's strange,
how one chance encounter can have
life changing effects.

I never followed blogs,
I just rode.

One day I rode with Jason
from ROCBIKE.COM,
he recommended BSNYC, FATTY
and GWADZILLA.

As I started following your blog,
I finally created an account so I could comment, all the times I nearly spit coffee on my monitor,
or out my nose.

And it is so easy to identify with
Elden, being a father, an escapee from Utah, and having family fighting breast cancer (one named Susan too). As you have made me laugh at the absurd, Fatty has shown me sides of family strength,
and being a dad that I hope I never have to endure.

Now Jason & I will be riding the Philly event. I hope that anyone here, that is within a train ride/
drive of Philly, will sign on for Fatty, or at least donate.

Even though your feelings of charity rides is warranted, I would hope even you sign up -
obviously under some alias.

Thank you for supporting a truely great guy, in the most trying time.

Good on you for dropping the sarcasm and honoring and respecting Fatty and his family, Snob.

I don't overly relate to Fatty, or even think he's that funny, but damn if I didn't read every single post and mist up at work on more than one occasion. A good guy and a good fight.

It took this to finally make me donate to his Livestrong cause. Hopefully he keeps up the blog, and the fight.

Snob,

Please post something funny today, if you can, to distract us from all this sadness. God knows I need it.

We heard the sad news this morning. Though we don't really know Fatty and his family personally, it feels like we do. It was a heroic, and brave fight, and you and Fatty made us part of it. Our best to Fatty and his family in this tough time. We wish them well, and hope they'll find some strength and hope in all the good wishes and prayers from we distant "strangers."

God bless Fatty's work and my sympathies go to him and his family in time of grief.

In heaven there is no head-wind,
there are no buses that do not signal, no wanton pedestrians, no pot-holes, no bonking, and all the bikes glide effortlessly while being infinitely compliant, both vertically and laterally.

truly a better place.

Thank you, Snob, for sharing this.

I had to stop reading Fatty's page, because I was crying at work too much. I cried again today.

Be sure to join the comment thread on Fatty's page, if you haven't already. At times like this, there's never too much love.
