Making Myself Scarce

Sorry, I neglected to mention last week I won't be around much through Labor Day as it's End-Of-Summer-Family-Extravaganza time.  (I'm off the Bike Forecast too.)  Very early this past Saturday morning I headed down to Central Park for the velocipeding contest, realized "What the hell was I thinking?," and sat up almost immediately.  Instead, I took the meandering route home, during which I took in murals:

And marine equipment:

Then upon arriving home I shucked my chamois, hosed myself down, loaded up the Wagon Queen Family Truckster, and hit the road along with my co-parent and seventeen (17) children:

(Obscured my vanity plate, which reads SCRANUS)

I had been considering bringing the Jones, but generally speaking the road bike is the safe bet when going out of town.

Hey, don't think of it as a vacation; think of it as an extended test of the Saris SuperClamp EX rack I'm evaluating.  I'll give a full accounting upon my return, but I will say the meantime that we made it to our destination and the bikes were still there, which is awesome.  Also, as you can see there's a fairly big size differential between wheels on each bike (that's a 24"-wheeled mountain bike in the foreground), yet the two-hook-per-arm configuration still manages to hold each bike securely.

If you want to know what pressure we're running, I'm afraid I can't tell you, though I'm pretty pleased with the tubeless setup on the Subie.

Anyway, it's possible I'll pop in between now and Labor Day if anything urgent comes up, but failing that you probably won't hear from me until Tuesday, September 4th or thereabouts.

Boom Shanka and so forth,

I thought you had a Hyundai. Do you drive multiple cars that are owned by a bank until you finish paying them back?

You probably expect cops and parents parked in the bike lane, but motorboats? That’s a hull ‘nother level.

I sort of think that vanity plate would get past the censors, but it's probably in Urban Dictionary by now, so never mind.

No bike for the co-parent, or just not loaded onto the roof rack yet? The minivan I am currently riding in has a rather mismatched pair, one cross bike, one step-through frame hybrid.

I can't tell if it's just the camera, but how much do your bikes stick out from the side of your vehicle?

Dont like the way the front tire of each bike extends out from side of the Subaru. Potential hazard there I think.

I’m guessing the spousal unit ain’t a biker? That’s coo. The wifey just smiles and waves as I ride into the sunset. Then she goes shopping.

I went on vacation last week. Promptly broke a toe and came down with a cold.

Came back this week and took my dog for dental surgery. I think his meds are better than mine.

I'm finally better than him at Fortnite.

Vacate safely all!

remember, when overtaking another vessel in the bike lane the rules state you should give a single, short blast of the horn and overtake on the starboard side. if that won't do, then provide two quick blasts of your horn and pass on the port side.

the interesting thing here is that your Tenovo would actually be more sea worthy...as long as there were minimal seamen aboard.

I here there is a Tenovo/Chris Craft vintage callabo dropping in the spring of '19. I shouldn't divulge that, but I am helping with the grand unveiling and booked the band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5f_ZyLhnmg

Enjoy the holiday and remember to wear your life vest good sir.

Wise decision there, snobby. Bike riders are nerds, and saddles beat up the ladies parts

James and Anonymous 8:46pm,

The camera perspective makes it look like it's sticking out way more than it is, it's a total non-issue.

Given your "Boom Shanka" reference, you should have entitled your post "Holiday"!

I'm not into stink pots, but I do love sailboats - the wind is free, kind of like the roads (after taxes). Glad to see that wasn't a sailboat in the bike lane.

Only some fat bureaucrat would proclaim that if you want a bigger bike on the back of your car you must buy a bigger car.

Skidmark said...

If your car is smaller than your bike the only solution would be a bigger car? That’s twisted.

As I thought about your latest Outside columnblogulation on my ride home, and barfed out noise at the third pedestrian that jumped in front of me despite your advice, I was reminded of the old adage:

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

I rode past that boat on that same Saturday; was on my way from Wakefield to the Randall Island Connector (just recently learned about this) on a 1984 Club Fuji with indexed shifting. Wound up meandering over to Central Park...
