The BSNYC Absentee Art Exhibition (Part I)

There is a time for words, and there's a time for art.  And there's also a time for me to leave town, which is what I've done.  As such, I have temporarily transformed this blog into a gallery, and as curator I have given Erik K his own show until I return on Wednesday the 27th.  So pour yourself a glass of wine, nibble some cheese, adopt your most affected accent, and peruse the art.  Today's piece, in honor of both the return of the Cinelli Unicanitor and the Olympic Games, is the "Beijing Gas Mask."  Enjoy.

    Nice.

I noticed the "vegan double straps" on the King Kog site. As a former match sprinter I almost fell out of my seat laughing. Those little gems will provide as much security as flip-flops on greasy Speedplays.

Oh wait, it will be fixters using them. Never mind, I'm sure they'll be more than adequate.

  5. Podium, schmodium. All that matters is that Snob didn't hand the keys to that idiot Opinionated Cyclist. It's hard enough not getting the daily fix of BSNYC/RTMS without having to avoid the site altogether.
    Excellent photoshopping, EK.

How about some art for the god fearing loonytune fixies.

So this guy was writing a story about his fixed gear bike...then the acid started to kick in?

  8. That may be Los Angeles art, but if you really want to cut it in New York, it's going to need more urine.

Plus. €32 and no philosophy? you expect me to spend my euros without some philosophy behind this?

Anwhoo...Eric, since you have the keys to the place, let's hide some dig shit somewhere, short-sheet the bed and re-paint.

  9. The juxtaposition of light and shadow that contrast the Ricardo Montebon-like plumage and sapphire ring against the stark silhouette of the cyclist seat/gas mask icon cast uncertainty and tension into the fettered traditions aroused by the cultural & environmental whitewashing of the Beijing festival. Furthermore, I feel a personal connection to nitrous-huffing Frank from Blue Velvet, which introduces another layer of brutish irony into the specter of global "sportsmanship."

    Just sayin...

  12. Nice Erik, always worth a laugh, I look forward to Monday's exhibit, and maybe I shouldn't say this and jinx it but do you think we got ride of our troll? Woohoo

  13. No green face paint to be seen anywhere. Thanks, Erik, for taking the high road, though I was all prepared for a psychotic rant or at least a semi-coherent ramble. I suppose I could go to youtube and find a few million of those if I really wanted one, though.

Quickest way to do this is to add a colon to the title:

    "Beijing: Gas Mask"

    For that real Art feel:

    "Beijing Gas: Mask"

    No semicolons allowed.

  16. Eric, that's cool and all, but where's teh transgressive? It's not art unless it's transgressive, but only against people who aren't likely to attack you physically. The Pope, Republicans, and touring riders are all good targets, as well as older, better established artists. You might want to take a whack at Ansel Adams - decent landscapes and all, but his action photography blows. The Grand Tetons? Please. They're average Tetons, at best.

You don't have to pay me for this advice. I'm just trying to be helpful.

  17. Aah, the contrast between Erik K's direct images suffused with various ironic and iconic metaphoric colorings and RTMS's often cutting yet humorous and pop culture infused wit.

The contrast of techniques, modes and styles of communication that this intended and thus non-ironic juxtaposition presents will engender endless recursive discussions and for this commenter moments of enlightenment and confusion to be savored for many morning commutes to come.

Bravo Erik, Bravo RTMS for so boldly linking the written and visual arts as tools to deconstruct popular trends in cycling.

A subject abjectly short of meaningful social commentary.

  21. Very nice Erik K!

It kinda reminds me of Duchamp's Fountain. (Found Art? Check. Vaguely triangular shape? Check. Dada school? Check. NYC based? Check.)

    http://tinyurl.com/Duchamp

Durn good art for sure, but I wouldn't go sticking my nose in it.

Now excuse me, but where's the goose cheese and PBR at this opening?

(Nice misdirection yesterday suggesting that BSNYC turn over the site to Fat Cyclist, but I figured FC was a little too busy to run two sites.)

  22. They are bringing back the Unicanitor? Was there demand for it? I had one of those abominations back in the 80's because it was cheap. I have no desire to repeat the pain and chafing.

  23. A friend of mine, a genuine bike racer from back in the day, always refers to those saddles as "EUNICH-inators." Maybe they are just the thing for hipsters in tight jeans, but I don't want one.

    We like good art.
    We love sepia art.

  25. Eric - what kind of breaks (brakes?) do you use on your bike ?

..Due to the lack of a rear break cable, splitting the bike in half and packing it up becomes a no brainier.

    just wondering aloud

    ReplyDelete
  26. the hiding of the subject's teeth with the whitewashed unicantor saddle speaks volumes on Chinese repression of truth in media and the Tibetan people. I dig it.

And I agree about the duchamp and the more urine.... somehow, it just fits.

  27. anon 1:11, You got me, I suck at spelling, I have however fixed the mistake. Either way, I should probably stick to art, But hey I've got ideas and I want to share them. And thanks to everyone who appreciated today's piece. On Monday I promise you, we will venture deeper down the rabbit hole.

  28. anyone know where to get an olympic saddle like that?

  29. Erik K is not only a funny fellow and great designer, but he can do bike trials on a ten speed from one lily pad to the next. Hammer:Proper

  30. Erik K--Bravo!

A--Nice commentary. Hit me up for the Art Museum the next time you're in town.

  31. erik,

Nice. The image evokes several things in me at once. Chinese censorhsip, the polluted Chinese air. The saddle also resembles the masks worn by physicians during the black plague (which originated in China, btw). But for me the most compelling is the sensitive potrayal of saddle sniffing.

"Beijing Gas Mask". Huh? Isn't that kinda righteous? Am I supposed to laugh at people like Terpstra who bungle Beijing traffic, too?
