This Just In: More Pluggin'

Forgive the self-promotion, but this marks a watershed moment for me as I've officially done my first transatlantic interview, with The Bike Show on London's Resonance FM. You can hear the podcast here. Wisely I opted not to do it in a Cockney accent.

The Bike Show is taking a look at the fixed-gear explosion from a global perspective and this installment also includes insight from Roxy Erickson of London’s Trixie Chicks and Gabriel Nogueira from Brazil. Many thanks to Jack Thurston of The Bike Show, and thanks as always for reading.

Now back to today's post, about velo journalism.

...oh jeez,bsnyc, not just a sell-out but an international / euro-trendy sell-out...

...actually, you deserve all the good mad props you get...within a sea of sameness, the bsnyc 'tempest in a teacup' is a great & refreshing cultural shot...

...glad to see you get those props, but hey, now the pressure is on...

Good job! Have you seen this around NY area? http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2007/11/29/nyregion/1129-BIKES_9.html

...thats two canadians, bluenoser...i may have lived 2/3 of my life in norcal, but believe me, as an ex-patriot canuck, you do NOT lose yer sense of pride in the 'great white north', bob n' doug included, eh ?...

...just sayin', hoser, i mean blue noser...

Wow. That voice sounds familiar. Confirms previous suspicions as to BSNYC's identity...

2/3 below the border. It must get confusing to hear Rick Mercer do his thing. If you know what I mean, eh?

BSNYC --

Good interview and good point about wanting to ask folks about why they are doing something that just looks like it can't be fun. The other night, I passed a guy on a fixie riding while sitting on the front end of his top tube.

Is this some trend I missed? Does a horizontal pedal stroke generate more power than a vertical? Or is this position just to get to the face plant faster?

BGW and Blue Noser --

Are you sure you two hosers aren't the McKenzie brothers? I mean like the parallels are eerie, eh?

Anonymous said...

Leroy--recumbent backlash perhaps?

Anonymous said...

...leroy, you hoser...i never felt so 'canadian' as when watching bob n' doug mckenzie, eh ?...whoa...except like maybe drinkin' a case a' brew & watchin' hockey fight highlights, eh ?...

...blue noser can tell ya more about it, but as i recall the term "bluenoser" is a classic nova scotian ocean fisherman's reference from the schooner of the same name...(my mum was in the navy in halifax before i was born, boyo)

..."bikesgonewild", well it obvious where i appropriated that from...too much american late-nite tv, but hell, thats not even good porn....

...bn, i read the on-line T O newspapers but the rick mercer thing i gotta check out...left/right/center ???...

...well jeez, eh ?...we now return you back to yer regularly scheduled bsnyc programming...

BSNYC,
Just out of curiosity. . .
I wonder how well your anonymity is holding up these days.

I mean, your blog is obviously very popular these days, and with all these podcast interviews, people can hear your voice. Plus, I'm sure you must be very funny in real life too, so it seems like probably a lot of people--coworkers, fellow racers, etc--would have put two and two together by now.

Am I right? Have you been outed locally yet? If so, how do you respond?

Anonymous said...

...ah yes, bluenoser, the true north strong & free...thanks for the link...
...although i'm not familiar w/ all the social & political players, i'll be checking out that subtle canuck humor...enjoyed mercer's term 'trontarded' regarding that typical T O malaise...

...btw, if he's a newfie, they've really cleaned up their act...i mean, i can actually understand all of those clearly enunciated words...

...question: cycling in nova scotia, NB & PEI ?...yer take beyond that 150 meters of cycling path ya mentioned...

I though it said "insight from Roky Erickson", I got excited. I didnt know aliens where into bikes!

But no. Its just Roxy.

Congradulations anyway.

Enquiring minds (and others): you might find these 'DVD extras' that didn't make the final cut of the interview of interest:

On motivations (MP3: 1'44")

On revealing his true identity (MP3: 2'18")

BSNYC -

Black ice at the Manhattan foot of the Brooklyn Bridge this morning.

Someone pointed it out to me or I might have slid getting on to the street.

Don't know what it looks like getting on to the Bridge for the ride back, but be careful. The weather is supposed to get slippery today!

BikeSnobNYC said...

Leroy,

Yeah, there were orange cones and a guy in a dayglo jacket warning people about it. I thought it was a murder scene at first, but no, they were just warning cyclists and pedestrians about the ice. It's truly a kinder, gentler New York.

I'm 56-not cool. I ride a fixed gear bike-poseur. Top tube pad on 1 of my bikes-shameful. Front brake-not hip. Can't skid, track stand, or ride backwards and I hoist my leg over the top tube to get on-whatta nerd. Shop at Roy's in Brooklyn-definitely not hip, no tattoos. I live in Midwood-is that really considered Brooklyn. Only been riding fixed 2 years-definitely a Johnny come lately. I'm going back to Spandex and carbon fiber where old goats belong-or maybe a recumbent, now there's an idea. SAVE ME, oh Bikesnob

Snobby,

I don't know why, but whenever I hear you I start channeling this guy:

No-lucker --

We're only old when our age is greater than our frame size.

(Centimeters, not inches, and when your age is greater than your seat tube height, switch to top tube and stem extension length if that helps.)

And even then, we can still ride.

But if we get a few more windy days, a recumbent with the windshield and aerodynamic skin is looking pretty good to me. Added bonus: no one would see me wearing Spandex.

Anonymous said...

...damn, leroy, now that i've transgressed the cm X yr parameter, wondering if buying a new bike w/ extended seat mast would be valid...

...greatly concerned...please inform...

...n8...saw that myself & my mind headed for that 13th floor elevator...think she might be related to the madness ???...

Anonymous said...

BGW -- I ride with a guy who has got ten years on me and is a few years past his top tube plus stem extension length.

He's a helluva a lot faster.

I could be that fast if I had a better bike, was in better shape, was more motivated, brushed between meals, mailed early in the day etc.

I hope to improve with age.

Nolucker:

Stop worrying and love the bomb. Seriously, once we get past a certain age we become beautified in eyes of the fashion deity. After that transformation we are able to do anything or wear anything without reproach, and the best part we are appreciated for doing it.
The only rule is that it is done unselfconciously for fun. It also helps to have a pot belly and a weird beard, then you are expected to be eccentric.
It is actually worse to be sixty and totally fit, because then you're just creepy.

Anonymous said...

^^^ the trick to not look creepy is wear one-piece jumpsuits.

LK said...

Wow! So much information. The pressure is enormous!

I'm just going to put on these 3 new hoodies and walk to lunch.

PS - I was hoping for some Roky Erickson too.

Wow, who knew you'd sound like a nasely, whiney, Jewish New Yorker. I'm shocked. Really. I am. Who would have thought.
