You may have about the recent spike in cycling deaths in New York City. You may also have read that the city has recently unveiled a plan to stop it. Well, my latest column for Outside is about what's going on and why it probably won't work:
Also, yesterday I fired up the ol' Broadcast-O-Mat 3000 and went on the air again. You can listen here:
Many thanks to my special guest, bike advocate Courtney Williams, a.k.a. The Brown Bike Girl. Caller highlights include Woman Who Honked At A Cyclist And Got Her Mirror Kicked Off Or Something (10:32), The Taxi Driver Who Admits Taxi Drivers Are The Problem (21:18), and of course The One And Only Leroy (28:25).
Also, it's recumbent upon me to remind you that WBAI is still fundraising, and that you're always welcome to go to the website and make a donation in the name of my show. Do so and there could be a signed book in it for you. (Unfortunately, I wrote the book.)
Finally, I was surfing the "You Tube" recently and guess who's still at it:
I could only watch a few minutes, as watching someone riding a bike on the highway at 50mph turned out to be surprisingly tedious. (And this is Episode 2!) Nevertheless, I'm glad he seems to be enjoying his Florida retirement.
Holy smokes....podi-odi-yo! And with clean wheels too! AND I read the Outside column too!
ReplyDeletePodium?
ReplyDeleteDude on the freeway gives us all a bad name. He's as narcistic as they come; do we think for a second that without a video he ever would have tired this?
And, TT, you are absolutely right, it's a boring and tedious video at that.
The radio show was good listening. Keep up the good work king of all media jr.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your radio show so much that I might donate to WBAI to make sure that you remain on the air. But I do miss my serving of lunch time snark I got daily on your blog. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I have a chance at the podium. No, I have neither read the Outside column nor listened to the radio show. But I will.
ReplyDeleteRounding out the third spot. Where is everybody?
ReplyDelete"You may have about the recent spike in cycling deaths in New York City."
ReplyDeleteI may have verbed, also,
Another well-written piece by WCRM, it's one of the few things I've read recently that felt hopeful.
ReplyDeleteI'll listen just to hear Leroy. In fact besides Snob hisself the only betterer guest would be lone wolf!
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteMr. Snob,
Thank you for your efforts advocating for safe cycling for all.
I thoroughly enjoy your articles and lately have been surreptitiously listening to your radio show while at work, blithely flipping through my work-screens while not really accomplishing much of anything during that hour. Yet my supervisor has twice complimented me on my efficiency. I guess looking busy while doing nothing is a skill I didn't know I had, and may you take some small satisfaction in knowing you have been the catalyst for its development.
OK, so he's skitching as much as he's drafting; and anyway, that's how all the ppl like Major Taylor set their records, drafting trains or motos or whatever.
ReplyDeleteBrunelle! He's now highway man? ROFLMAO. Sketching a moped? He's plunging new depths of douchebaggery. Wow. heeheeeheeehaw. As for that Vision Zero thing, every little bit helps, but running the gorillas off the roads is going to be exceedingly difficult. M only interaction with the popo in NYC on a bike was a pleasant one even after i was squaked to the curb, but i think they should ALL rotate through bike detail. Good for the squad's health, connection to the precinct they serve, and shows them what's up. Cops on bikes.
ReplyDeleteI believe in the Netherlands the law automatically assumes that if a car hits a bike the driver is culpable; the same hierarchy of responsibility if a cyclist hits a pedestrian. It seems the current US law sets too low a bar for motorist behavior and therefore the NYPD simply doesn't enforce it.
ReplyDeleteWith a coupla changes in terminology and numbers, that Outside article about NYC could be recycled to describe the situation in Washington, D.C.
ReplyDeletei think i saw lone wolf yesterday
ReplyDeletethat Lucas video absolutely had my blood boiling. boiling i say!
ReplyDeleteif it were just him endangering himself...then fine, ride off a fucking bridge or head on into a semi
but grabbing on to a gal on a moped (which itself is barely quick enough to keep up with miami traffic) riding around on the causeways, riding on god damn I95 at an interchange that is already fairly tricky and dangerous with people doing a million miles per hour and cars merging all over....
he's endangering other people for the sake of fucking likes or whatever the kids are into collecting on their social medias these days.
fuck him directly in the chamois area with a creaky ass splinter filled renovo bike frame ...size extra large.
okay, gonna go listen to the archive of the Snob Show to calm myself. get some kisses from Leroy's dog maybe.
I thought the latest show was just fantastic. You've really found you radio voice and cadence in a short amount of time.
ReplyDeleteThe only redeeming thing about the Brunelle video is the fairly graceful way the box-truck driver dealt with the skitching; turned on his flashers, slowed gradually, then accelerated once he was clear. I'm kinda surprised that got left in the video...
ReplyDeleteAlso, I agree with the surprising tediousness and skitching uninvited on a moped is assholery. It must be hard enough to reach highway speeds without towing a Lycra-wrapped douchecanoe.
"riding a bike on the highway at 50mph"
ReplyDeleteWhat could possibly go wrong?
Erm, I sure hope Ol' Lucas does some freeway surface condition recon before these forays. Drafting at 40-50 and riding into a pothole/large bump/piece of debris could be disastrous.
ReplyDeleteNot that I'm saying I hope that happens, of course.
No, really.
(okay, who am I kidding..)
I like how he hired some chick to act impressed when he grabbed onto her scooter... all while going 25mph on a highway.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive stuff.
I am puzzled by the seemingly random bunny hops. What for he jumps up and down like that?
