Sorry, Been Singlespeeding!

Sorry I've been reticent (as long as you don't count a weekly Outside column, a daily bike forecast, and an unrelenting barrage of brainfarts on Twitter) but I've been preoccupied with various pressing matters, including rekindling my love affair with this artisanal expression of turn-of-the-decade one-speed chic after spending lots of time on a chubby-tired bike with a wide range of gear ratios:

  1. I figure all my bikes are 'single-speed'...I mean, really, I can only use 1 gear at a time. Unless you want to get literal...and then you have to pick just 1 speed to ride at...that would be a hard one. I'd have to go w/ 15mph.

  7. pbateman likes his coffee black but its not at all some sort of racial thingOctober 17, 2018 at 12:01 PM

That bike needs a silver stem.

@Matt - 15mph is a good speed. Kind of a good all-rounder that can be used on the road, trails, gravel, possibly even on grass if you psi is right.

I think if i had to choose a single speed I'd go with coffee/caffeine. Its delicious and goes well with pie.

Coffee is like the Super Record of speed. Coke is maybe like Ultegra at best.

  8. @pb

Coke is the fizzy brown nectar of the gods!

Have you ever opened up a musette and been happy to find a piping hot cup of coffee? Of course not! But spying that beautiful red and white can will make your day.

Ultegra? Hah! Coke is full on Dura-Ace!

  9. My first bikes were all single speeds; I was 4 to 8 years old - those were the days.

  10. 1904 Cadardi,

Really nothing better than a Coke on a long ride...except maybe a Dr. Pepper.

  11. pbateman is pretty bored at work today but its still to f'in hot to rideOctober 17, 2018 at 3:30 PM

    my apologies.

i meant the powdery white devil is ultegra at best.

not the sugary red and white devil.

Coke with a capital C is indeed quite delish and after extensive testing I'd say its definitely the DA Di2 of beverages with sugar and bubbles.

The intersection of bikes, food and expert ratings make this blog an invaluable resource to anyone new too biking or cooking.

  14. Today I shunned my responsibilities and enjoyed a ride on my red singlespeed BMX. Took a break to show my solidarity with evolving Canadian law. Mexican Coke has cane sugar instead of US Coke's HFCS and thus is the better choice for smug douchbags like myself.

  16. So quick release skewers go on the drive side on singlespeeds, right?

  18. Ride safe all!

(And if anyone is wondering, on a hot day, the vending machine at the top of Bear Mountain has the best Cokes.)
