Just Popping Back In To Promote Myself

Hello!

Just poking my head in the door to let you know that on Monday, April 17th at 7:00pm I'll be bloviating at the REI in Soho:
The subject of my bloviation will be "mountain biking," which is a hot new trend involving riding bicycles with knobby tires on forest trails.  If you live in New York City and have been curious about this exciting new sport, or if you just like hearing goofy bike bloggers be goofy, you won't want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime event.  Topics will include:

--Where to ride
--How to get there
--Why you don't need dropper posts and other expensive crap
--#whatpressureyourunning

Copies of my latest book will also be for sale, and I'll even sign them for you!  Or, if you already have my book and want to give it back, I'll gladly accept it, though I won't give you a refund.

Best of all, I'll do my best to scrounge up some fun stuff to give away, such as hats and coffee and hatfuls of coffee and stuff like that.

Anyway, that's all for now.  I'll be back here on Monday, and in the meantime I've got a whole other blog you can read!

Nobody gives of themselves more than me.

Love,

--Wildcat Etc. and so forth

  1. Someone told me there was a bike blog around here.

    And podio o do.

  2. What color will the hats in the "hats full of coffee" situation be?

  3. Like every other bike blogger--sooner or later--I see you've gone into full-blown advocacy. That's cool, we certainly need it. But goddamn, that forecast is some boring shit if you don't live in NYC.
Often Funny BSNYC, RIP. New, Ridiculously Useful but Sleep-Inducing BSNYC...hello, I guess.

  4. ps...you can't say scranus at the new blog....

  5. Anonymous 12:09pm,

Yeah. It's a blog for people who ride bikes in NYC. Good thing you don't ever, ever have to read it.

In fact you don't have to read this blog either.

Thanks for taking the time to share your great comment and valuable insight.

  6. I won't be able to make it to your event on April 17 (because I live a long way away). However, if you are giving stuff away please send me some.

  7. ...um, do I have to have a mountain bike cycle before showing up to REI? And, #whatpressureyourunning do I need? Do mountain bike cyclers wear cargo shorts?

...I just want to look like I belong... is all.

I WAS going to check out the new blog, but with this information, I'm out. A man has to have standards, you know.

  9. I think I'll just pull over here, under this shade tree.

  10. The flyer for the MTB talk just says BikeSnobNYC. No other names listed. Has BikeSnobNYC gone back to his original brand, and abandoned the the names he has gone by over the last 10+/- years?

    ReplyDelete
  11. We don't have to read the other blog or this one, true. But I enjoy reading this blog. Since I don't live in NYC, the other one not so much. You shouldn't be mad at readers who are expressing their disappointment.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Look, no need for harsh words. Sure, some people like this new development, some people feel threatened by it, and yet another group of people aren't reading any of this malarky any fucking way. But if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's this: Red Kite Prayer still licks dirty scranus. This will never change, until BikeSnobNYC starts writing for them, too.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm sorry I called your writing "malarky", Wildcat. I'm very heated right now. I'll settle down and try to keep it civil.

  14. Steely Danzig,

So you're telling me not to be irritated when someone leaves a comment on the blog I've been writing for 10 years that they don't like the other blog that's not written for them?

When you buy pants at the Gap, do you then go next-door to Baby Gap and complain that everything's too small?

    Come on.

  15. Love the Brooklyn Bridge superhero video over at the Snobcast. I lived in the dorm at Pace U. in lower Manhattan back in... hmmm... 1986? Don't recall any bike lanes on the bridge at that time, but I do recall an on-ramp to the bridge nestled up against windows of the school library. You can study to the roar of traffic there.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Shop at the Gap? Too rich for my blood. Give me Goodwill or Thrift Mart goods any day.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nobody likes change. I presume the general lament is the presumed loss of week-daily posts here. No matter what happens, thanks for the 10 years which equals an eternity in the blog meme-o-verse.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I guess it's like when Bob Dylan went electric, or did a Dodge commercial. I think that the disappointment is because we will see less of this blog. A compliment, if you will. You are correct. I have no right to tell you what should and shouldn't irritate you. Congratulations on your success.
P.S. More Cipo = more better.

  22. Lean toward advocacy on this blog over the years seems undeniable.

The standout aspect is the style and the writing. Arguably the main advocacy focus on this blog is arguably aimed at the Cult of the Helmet, which is in my opinion right on. Dismantling the notion that cycling is fundamentally unsafe (hey kiddies, be safe: stay on the couch with your touchscreen and bucket of candy) and that to achieve Perfect Safety we need to shame one another into wearing helmets. Or absolve ourselves entirely by making & enforcing mandatory helmet laws instead of actually creating bike infrastructure that would promote safety.

Okay, so more of that type of advocacy & less of analyzing CraigsList advertisements of fixies. The blog's still funny as fuck, and fixie ads are pretty much 10 years ago.

I like the new Transportation Alternatives blog, but then again I'm a TA member and an NYC bike commuter, so it hits the sweet spot. My only quibble: you can't expand the images to examine the photographic details.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Totally missed opty to use that South African bikes flying in the wind footage.

  24. Well, this goes to show.....We, the commentariat will comment on just about anything.

  26. Wow, someone needs another vacay. A few people saying how they like the "traditional" blog more than the new TA one and our author can't take it? Truly bizarre. When I go to a restaurant and order two dishes and I get asked how they are, it's fairly common to say I like one more than the other. Does the chef come out with a cleaver and attempt to kill me because I preferred one dish over another? Lighten up, Francis.

  27. Wildcat, for someone who was addicted to this blog, don't you think we're entitled to a proper burial? A suicide note? The last post? Or do you want us to keep coming and asking for a comeback? By the way, thanks for 10 years and have the best of luck on the new blog. PS.: scranus

Whoa, are there still remnants of snow in New York City? Where I am it is windy and cold and the snow continues to exist (although that nice March sun reflecting off of it feels so good!).

Re - the new post and all that - I am grateful for the Snob's free (yes sirree, FREE) work all these years for my lunch time enjoyment, and I will not begrudge him for trying something different. Moreover, I have complete confidence that he will not cave under the intense lobbying [that's "lobbying," not to be confused with Lob]pressure of the helment-industrial complex.

And, check out the French news regarding a mandatory fine for not helmenting a kidoo while cycling. The world has, indeed, lost its marbles.

i was thinking the same thing. mayhaps snobbie could come here on days he isn't posting anything and just post a single line of "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz". could be a 100 comment day on the first one. of course it would need to actually be at least 101 as ted doesn't count.

  39. Aw man, I so wish I could make it to REI. This new mountain biking trend sounds awesome. Is it true they moved the shifters up from the downtube to the handlebar and you operate it with your thumbs? That would be SO cool if it's true.

Oh, and the weather blog is funny, but living on the west coast, I get confused because my weather isn't the same as yours. Then I forget what city I'm in. Also, I forgot what I was going to say next. Okay see you bye-bye.

But the last few days have been crap: first snowy and then yesterday and today were cold... It's been less than ideal for like three or four days, and I'm sick of it! And knowing that the weather is going to be cold FOREVER, now? That there will never be another summer for ALL OF TIME?!? That takes the cake! AYHSMB FTW!

I don't get the people who are complaining. They're making me pretty angry actually, how do you comment on someone's free blog as if they owe you something - because you clicked on ads suddenly the person benefitting from the ads owes you something?

  84. I dunno, I've been reading the TA site and the posts aren't that much different. No one noticed that this blog has always had a ton of local NYC content? This is the filter I need right now anyway. Lately I haven't been keeping up with the five-ish posts a week, so this way, I can go to the TA site if I need my WCRM fix, knowing that I'm not missing out on other-worldly stuff (aliens?) posted here if don't read every post there.

PS - Please add an extra paragraph per week to fill in the Yehuda time now freed from our schedules.

  85. Change is scary. I've loved the Snobville Gazette for years and it's the wonderful comments dept. Trying to be witty I put up a couple of comments (i.e. Edith Piaf) that in retrospect might be viewed as criticism. Far from what I had intended.

Looking forward to the original continuing to generate insight, humor and rage, and his new publication.

I wish Mr. Snob the best and a future Nobel Prize (one for Leroy's Dog & CC too). May he ride on on two wheels for many more years, or a unicycle if he so chooses.

I also follow spokenscene and the delightful Ms. babble, AHTBM and the antics of Stevil and drunkcyclist.

I will continue to check back regularly for updates to BSNYC and even when there are no updates by WCRM I will enjoy the often intensely amusing comments that continue to roll in.
