Just poking my head in the door to let you know that on Monday, April 17th at 7:00pm I'll be bloviating at the REI in Soho:
The subject of my bloviation will be "mountain biking," which is a hot new trend involving riding bicycles with knobby tires on forest trails. If you live in New York City and have been curious about this exciting new sport, or if you just like hearing goofy bike bloggers be goofy, you won't want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime event. Topics will include:

Copies of my latest book will also be for sale, and I'll even sign them for you! Or, if you already have my book and want to give it back, I'll gladly accept it, though I won't give you a refund.
Best of all, I'll do my best to scrounge up some fun stuff to give away, such as hats and coffee and hatfuls of coffee and stuff like that.

Love the Brooklyn Bridge superhero video over at the Snobcast. I lived in the dorm at Pace U. in lower Manhattan back in... hmmm... 1986? Don't recall any bike lanes on the bridge at that time, but I do recall an on-ramp to the bridge nestled up against windows of the school library. You can study to the roar of traffic there.

Lean toward advocacy on this blog over the years seems undeniable.
ReplyDeleteThe standout aspect is the style and the writing. Arguably the main advocacy focus on this blog is arguably aimed at the Cult of the Helmet, which is in my opinion right on. Dismantling the notion that cycling is fundamentally unsafe (hey kiddies, be safe: stay on the couch with your touchscreen and bucket of candy) and that to achieve Perfect Safety we need to shame one another into wearing helmets. Or absolve ourselves entirely by making & enforcing mandatory helmet laws instead of actually creating bike infrastructure that would promote safety.
Okay, so more of that type of advocacy & less of analyzing CraigsList advertisements of fixies. The blog's still funny as fuck, and fixie ads are pretty much 10 years ago.
I like the new Transportation Alternatives blog, but then again I'm a TA member and an NYC bike commuter, so it hits the sweet spot. My only quibble: you can't expand the images to examine the photographic details.
Totally missed opty to use that South African bikes flying in the wind footage.

Wow, someone needs another vacay. A few people saying how they like the "traditional" blog more than the new TA one and our author can't take it? Truly bizarre. When I go to a restaurant and order two dishes and I get asked how they are, it's fairly common to say I like one more than the other. Does the chef come out with a cleaver and attempt to kill me because I preferred one dish over another? Lighten up, Francis.

ReplyDeleteRe - the new post and all that - I am grateful for the Snob's free (yes sirree, FREE) work all these years for my lunch time enjoyment, and I will not begrudge him for trying something different. Moreover, I have complete confidence that he will not cave under the intense lobbying [that's "lobbying," not to be confused with Lob]pressure of the helment-industrial complex.
And, check out the French news regarding a mandatory fine for not helmenting a kidoo while cycling. The world has, indeed, lost its marbles.

ReplyDeleteI happen to enjoy the TA blog. While not a NYC resident nor having ever been one, I've spent a great deal of time there over the years having friends and family who reside there. Your new venture is a nice bite size piece of your irreverence and allows me to enjoy the city vicariously. Keep it up.

Astounded at the whining here. I like the new blog even though I live in Boston. WRM is an excellent and funny writer -- I do not really care if he writing about tire pressure or traffic in Queens -- both are irrelevant topics to me. I enjoy the writing. Plus, he has to pay his mortgage. How he does so is his business. Whether we want to be on the ride is up to us.

ReplyDeleteI don't get the people who are complaining. They're making me pretty angry actually, how do you comment on someone's free blog as if they owe you something - because you clicked on ads suddenly the person benefitting from the ads owes you something?
People are just pissed that their daily comedy routine has been broken. And those who based their self-esteem on making many comments are feeling empty.

This is the filter I need right now anyway. Change is scary. I've loved the Snobville Gazette for years and it's the wonderful comments dept. Trying to be witty I put up a couple of comments (i.e. Edith Piaf) that in retrospect might be viewed as criticism. Far from what I had intended.

I just don't understand the internet trolls. I have been an avid reader since the days of vito the helper monkey, the pista index and diminutive Frenchman units and have enjoyed every read. I don't live in NYC but that didn't stop me from watching "the Gangs of New York" and it will not stop me from continuing to follow this blog and also reading the new blog with TA. I also follow spokenscene and the delightful Ms. babble, AHTBM and the antics of Stevil and drunkcyclist.

I'm guessing that snobs' new gig means he gets to do more riding as opposed to browsing the internet looking for things to snark at. If that's the case, whether it pays more or not I find his motives to be unimpeachable.
